Making our house your home

An Allt Dubh, Newmarket, Isle of Lewis

The housing development at An Allt Dubh, Newmarket, Isle of Lewis, was officially opened on 21 October 2026 by HHP Board Member and Ward Councillor, Duncan Macinnes. The 72-home development was delivered by CalMax Construction in three phases, with the final phase completed in May 2026.

The development includes one- to four-bedroom detached and semi-detached homes, including 13 adapted properties, with the mix meeting a range of housing needs.

Work on the site began in July 2022. The development represents an investment of £14.17 million, supported by £9.75 million in Scottish Government grant funding and £4.42 million from HHP.

The development has been designed as an extension to the existing Newmarket community. It includes walking links and has also delivered improvements near Newmarket Playpark through CalMax Construction’s community benefit commitments. These works included upgrades to fencing and gates, along with riverbank reinforcement in areas affected by flooding.

Calum Mackay, HHP Chair, said

“An Allt Dubh is a significant addition to Newmarket, providing 72 high-quality homes adding to the strong community that is already here. It also brings a wider choice of homes for individuals and families and makes a long-lasting positive contribution to the area.  Thank you to  CalMax Construction, TIG and everyone involved in delivering these much-needed homes and to The Scottish Government as this development would not have been possible without grant funding. A particular thank you to the planning team at the Comhairle for their input into the design of the development.”

Social Justice and Housing Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said

“We are proud to have supported this development, which will provide 72 high quality, energy efficient, affordable homes for the Newmarket community. Good quality housing like this is essential to attract and retain people in our rural and island communities.

By working with partners such as Hebridean Housing Partnership, we are delivering homes for a wide range of needs, including quality family homes, which is central to our key priority of eradicating child poverty.

We remain focused on delivering 110,000 affordable homes across Scotland by 2032, with at least 70% for social rent and at least 10% in our rural and island communities.”

James Mackinnon, Project Manager at CalMax Construction Limited said

“We are pleased to have worked with Hebridean Housing Partnership and the wider project team to deliver 72 new homes at An Allt Dubh. As a local contractor, we take pride in building homes for people in our own community. It’s good to see the development complete and residents settled in. We’d like to thank our staff, subcontractors, suppliers, and everyone involved for their hard work throughout the project. We wish all the residents well in their new homes.”
