John Swinney, First Minister of Scotland, as part of his visit in the Outer Hebrides called out to visit An Allt Dubh to witness the progress of the housing project first hand.
The development, managed by Hebridean Housing Partnership (HHP) and constructed by Calmax Construction Ltd, is currently nearing completion of its second phase, with the first phase of 33 homes having been successfully handed over in November 2024 and a third phase of housing to be completed in 2026.
During the visit, the First Minister met with representatives from HHP, Calmax Construction, and residents of An Allt Dubh. The tour provided an opportunity for Mr. Swinney to engage with the community and discuss the impact of the new housing on local residents.
The An Allt Dubh development is a significant project aimed at addressing the housing needs in and around Stornoway.

“Good quality, affordable housing is essential to help attract and retain people in rural and island communities and we are working determinedly to provide it. The development here at An Allt Dubh is a shining example of private and public sector collaboration addressing key housing needs by building homes that are affordable, accessible and sustainable.
In this financial year we will invest £768 million in affordable housing across Scotland, supporting our commitment to deliver 110,000 affordable homes by 2032, 10% of which will be delivered in our rural and island communities such as Stornoway.”
HHP Chief Executive Dena Macleod said, “Nothing great is ever achieved alone and this housing development is further testament to the partnership working with contractors, landowners, Scottish Government, TIG, NHS OT Dept and CNES. The houses are built to high standards and include adapted properties which have transformed lives for some of our tenants.
